This, he said, is a great opportunity to cooperatives to demonstrate it contributions and commitment to this responsibility.
However, he added, cooperatives have changed unlike before when they were caring and sharing adding that today they have become very competitive and focusing on profit making.
This, he said, is diverting the true course of cooperatives.
“Provisioning of affordable housing and decent homes is a priority for government in achieving the Big Four Agenda and considering that more than 14 million Kenyans are cooperators,” he noted.
He said cooperatives play a very crucial role in the provision of affordable shelter by bridging in the gap in housing and market in Kenya.
He highlighted most of the challenges Saccos are facing currently as mainly the issues that go with the regulations especially from the regulators and issues of compliance.
Githinji said they have to comply to get into the new dispensation where the Saccos are now being termed as deposit taking Saccos.
“Sometimes those who are on check off have the challenge of getting remittance from the employers. We have had a very high adverse and very negative publicity of Saccos which is not the case,” he said.
He said most of the time Saccos are are portrayed negatively though there is much better job done by the institutions.
However, he said there could be one or two Saccos that never towed the line and ended up collapsing.
He said many cooperatives are doing very well to empower Kenyans, provide job opportunities, and creating many other avenues to ensure they empower their members.
